In fact, when the band released SuperUnknown in 1994, the album debuted at # 1 on the Billboard 200 as well as produced two grammy winning singles "Black Hole Sun" and "SpoonMan." The band broke up in 1997 and each of the members joined various other bands and side projects. In 2012, SoundGarden reunited and released their sixth studio album, KING ANIMAL. As of 2012, SoundGarden has sold more than 10.5 Million Records in the United States alone and over 22 Million world wide.
They are now the original members of their glory era: Chris Cornell (Vocals), Kim Thayil (Lead Guitar), Matt Cameron (Drums) and Ben Shepherd (Bass). Their music catalog includes Ultramega OK, Louder Than Love, Badmotorfinger, Superunknown, Down on the Upside, and King Animal. To this day, SOUNDGARDEN lists Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, and the Buthole Surfers as their main musical influences. Their style was a mix of Heavy Metal fused with punk and later some psychedelic sounds. They are also known for their DROP D Tuning and even have went lower by tuning the E String is turned down to B. Many of their songs use these unorthodox tunings to make the unique style and sound.
Just as SoundGarden released SuperUnknown in 1994, Nine Inch Nails released Downward Spiral. Both of these albums celebrate 20 Years this year, which is one of the reasons both bands decided to Tour together. Nine Inch Nails or NIN is an American Industrial band that was founded in 1988 by lead singer Trent Reznor. Trent Reznor is Nine Inch Nails as he is responsible for basically all aspects of the bands sound. After Reznor records a new album he assembles a live band to perform with him. Trent uses a ton of synthesizers and plays all instruments besides drums. Their first studio album, Pretty Hate Machine was released in 1989.
Nine Inch Nails has released 9 Studio Albums to date, with the most recent being Hesitation Marks, which was released in 2013. Nine Inch Nails has been nominated for 13 Grammy's and has won two. They have also won Best Metal Performance, and best Alternative Metal Performance. In 2003, Rolling Stone Magazine placed Downward Spiral at 200 out of 500 as the greatest albums of all time. The same year, they voted NIN as the 94th Greatest Artists in the Top 100. They have sold over 15 Million Records in the United States and over 30 Million World Wide. Between SoundGarden and NIN, they have sold over 25 Million Records in the US alone.
I find it fascinating that these two bands were originally slated to Tour together in 1994, 20 years ago, if not for a vocal injury sustained by Chris Cornell. Chris Cornell and Trent Reznor are both skilled in their craft. Cornell is more well rounded and Reznor is more controversial. Nine Inch Nails even recorded a ton of material in Charles Manson's old home. Reznor is also responsible for founding the band Marilyn Manson. So we have SoundGarden (Alternative Metal) and NIN (Industrial Metal) both at its finest. The band Ministry was the first mainstream industrial act but NIN took it to another level. Marilyn Manson followed in Trent Reznor's footsteps. Nonetheless, both of these bands were always in my favorites category and I am looking forward to get the chance to seen them both. This should be an awesome show. Stay tuned as I will give a review and hopefully get some youtube video of the show.
Here are a few of the Bands' better known material:
