PHILLY BEATS NEW YORK IN A GOD AWFUL FOOTBALL GAME
By JASON VOORHEES 10/20/15
Can you say sloppy?! As an Eagles fan as well as an NFL fan, I thought that this was a piss poor excuse for an NFL game. Add the fact that everything was on the line in this game as well as the huge rivalry of Philly/New York, made this game all the more dreadful. Coming into this season, the Eagles had so much promise and the Giants were said to be in the best situation they have been in since their super bowl seasons. Well, both of these teams have major holes. It is hard to believe that the Eagles have the NFC East lead after the way they have played thus far. The Eagles offense was supposed to be the strength coming into the season. However; the Eagles defense has been the backbone of their team so far.
Chip Kelly has been a horrible game coach so far as the Eagles have yet to play a full game (4 Quarters) of good football. It is almost like Jekyll and Hyde when it comes to Philly. Sam Bradford looks like a deer in headlights six games into the year. The fans have been force fed the fact that Sam Bradford is one of the most accurate quarterbacks in the NFL. Well, he has been far from accurate and is so inconsistent from series to series. Bradford has nine interceptions including 4 in the END ZONE!! Also, of the nine picks, six have been in the red zone. It is understood that Bradford would take some time to get comfortable, not only from a health standpoint, but also on an athletic level. Unfortunately, Bradford still looks clueless at times and his nine interceptions is good enough for second in the NFL this year. Sam better get a handle on this quickly because if his poor play continues, the Eagles are running out of time to go on a run.
Demarco Murray actually had his best game of the season. He actually appeared to hit the holes with more authority and he finally showed signs of the player that was the NFL rushing leader from one year ago. The Eagles offensive line is still a work in progress but they did show signs of improvement last night. However; it cannot be ignored that they faced a New York Giants pass rush that is in a lack of better words, garbage. Nonetheless, the Eagles cannot help the level of talent that they face from week to week. Also, a win is a win. After watching this sloppy performance last night, there are still major concerns for the Eagles. Chip Kelly is called an innovator and genius all of the time. Well, six weeks into the season, Chip looks more like a joker and idiot. He has an egotistical attitude and this may be the downfall of this team.
Part of coaching is making adjustments and observations that lead to positive changes. And Chip has undoubtedly shown that he is not good at making these adjustments. I myself have never played football nor coached a team. However; it does not take a rocket scientist to see where the holes lie in the Eagle's offense. The offensive line remains the weak link. But, if you see what the Eagles are working with talent wise on this unit, then you have to see that a few minor tweaks could actually make this unit shine. DeMarco Murray was brought in here to be a north and south runner. Well, even with last nights success, Chip still has Murray and the line pulling from side to side instead of pushing uphill and driving the defense back wards. This is a flaw that must be recognized and its getting a little old that Chip cannot fix this issue. The Eagles offense under Kelly has been predicated no the run and the Eagles spent a ton of money at the running back position. Ok...so why is Sam Bradford dropping back 35 times a game? This is very disturbing especially hearing all of time how smart Chip Kelly is. Sooner or later, you must commit to the run and last night showed that pounding the ball will eventually wear down the opposing defense.
The Eagles now look to a Sunday evening game versus the upstart Carolina Panthers. Carolina quarterback Cam Newton has lived up to his "Superman" nickname thus far. He has the best QBR in the fourth quarter and has lead the team to three comebacks already. 27 times, Newton has scored a rushing touchdown and passing touchdown. This is second only to hall of fame Steve Young, who had 33. This blend of versatility makes Newton extremely dangerous. The Eagles have been steadfast against the run; however they have been inconsistent against the pass. And now they will be facing the most dangerous quarterback to date. If the Eagles want to make the playoffs and go far, they need to win this game. Carolina has a strong defense and a win would show that this team can compete with the big boys. However; Chip Kelly must get off his high horse and play to the Eagles strength, run the ball. Sam Bradford may turn out to be a better second half quarterback. The question remains, can Bradford start to make better decisions and less mistakes. This team cannot continue to turn the ball over and expect to win. We shall see next Sunday how this team will progress.
