Slyphr is a local Hard Rock/Metal Band out of Philadelphia. The Band is comprised of School of Rock All Stars Ric Haas, Ian Roberts and Sal Tommassello along with another great musician Alec McCloskey. The Band was a finalist in the King of the Boards Battle of the Bands Competition in 2013. Slyphr features Ian Roberts on Lead Vocals, Ric Haas on Guitar, Sal Tommassello on Drums along with Alec McCloskey on Bass Guitar. What is so amazing about this band is that three of the members all are graduates from the School of Rock and are still under the age of 18. McCloskey is only 21. This Band has all the makings of the next GREAT Metal Band to come from the local scene.
The Band has an EP called Stations of the Cross which features four tracks 1) The Eyes of the People, 2) Out of Luck, 3) False Idol and 4) Binded. SLYPHR also plays many great cover songs and performs at many live venues. The Philly Rock Radio Crew had a chance to catch up with the Band, up close and personal, on Sunday October 19th at the LEGENDARY DOBBS THEATER in Center City Philadelphia. SLYPHR performed on a bill with other great Metal Rockers Crown of Earth, PsychoPrism, Scattered Hamlet (A South Texas Metal Band) opening for the All Star Metal Band HELLION!
Philly Rock Radio was able to meet the Band and their families at this show. Let me tell you folks...you could not meet a better young group of boys poised for Metal stardom. Let us start with Ric Haas on Guitar. I am sure many people would compare Haas looks to many great Metal Legends of the past and present. Well, I am going to say he reminds me of my childhood idol Dave Mustaine, of Megadeth. Not only does Ric look like Mustaine, he plays like him too. Then there is Ian Roberts on vocals. When you look at Ian you may say...there is no way this guy can have all star vocals. Well how wrong you are. Ian brings all ranges to the table and has endless energy on the stage. He is the perfect frontman for a Metal Band.
Of course there is Sal Tommassello on Drums. Sal looks like a young Tommy Lee. He plays the hell out of the drums and sounds amazing. He dresses the part as well wearing a fedora. And finally, there is Alec McCloskey on Bass. Alec is a high energy talent that keeps his motor running. Together this band makes magic on the stage. When I was invited to see this show I had no idea what to expect from the band, having only heard them on the internet once the night before the show. The Station was going to interview the young stars so I was doing my research on short notice. Well, you can throw the research out the window. This Band was so impressive that the internet versions of the songs were blown away by the live performance. As the Band opened...you could just tell that they have Metal in their veins.
When I listen to SLYPHR I see a young version of PANTERA, who after talking to one of the Band Members, I was informed that Pantera is indeed one of their influences. I would describe SLYPHR as Pantera meets Guns 'N Roses. This Band is so unbelievably good. We were able to meet the family of the Band and they were so friendly. They gave us all tee-shirts and CDs. I think it is SOOOOO cool that the family is so involved with the Band. There are so many bands where the members have left their families high and dry. Some musicians run away from their parents in a rebellious manner. Not these guys. They have a great support group and the sky is the limit.
We all had a blast hanging out with the Band. I was most impressed with their musical interests and favorites. It is so good to see that Heavy Metal is BACK! The Band Members were all friendly and made us feel welcomed. They were just as happy to see us as we were to see them. They even showed another side that I never would have believed. SLYPHR conquered the "South Street Taco!!" For those of you that do not know what a South Street Taco is, it is a famous Jim's Steak wrapped in a Lorenzo's Pizza. Jim's Steaks are on the same side of the street as DOBBS. Then you walk the steak over to Lorenzo's Pizza and go to town. Well, they went to town all right!!!! They all housed the huge concoction of food...lol. We even were able to get pictures.
As HELLION went on stage, I observed all four Band Members watching with close eyes on the legendary band. It was awesome to see young boys enjoying good old fashioned HEAVY METAL. At one point in the show, Ric looked over confidently and said "Ann Boleyn is the female version of DIO." Ann is Ronnie as a female. We all laughed and chuckled...how true is that. All of her vocal ranges and mannerisms on stage remind you of the late DIO. So HELLION concluded a great night of MUSIC. In closing, I will say that I cannot wait to see SLYPHR again live and I can definitely see them making it Big Time! I want to wish the band luck and I appreciate the opportunity that they gave us at Philly Rock Radio, that we will never forget.
