The band has had three successive number one albums on the Billboard 200...Faceless, IV, and The Oracle. The Oracle was their best album to date and produced some excellent metal material. GodSmack also has 20 top ten rock radio hits, including 15 songs in the top 5, which is a record number of top ten singles by a rock band. They have sold over 20 million records in just over ten years. GodSmack is a cross between Alice In Chains and Metallica. They have the heavy sound of Metallica and the grunge dark vocals of Alice In Chains. So now lets move onto their just released "1000 Horsepower." The cover artwork has a muscle car with fire and flames in the background. In November of 2013, GodSmack reported that they had begun writing the material for the new album. Even Sully admits that the band has made major headway in the songwriting department. In April, Sully described the album as "BAD ASS" on his official Facebook Page.
The entire album was recorded in their brand new studio in Boston. I have listened to the album a few times and I must admit that it continues to grow on me. The album begins with the title track, 1000HP. This song is the typical heavy GodSmack sound and actually starts out with a motor revving. The lyrics are clearly about the bands beginnings and how the heavier they became, the more success that they achieved. The next song, FML (Fuck My Life) is a bit more slow and the lyrics are very deep and dark. My personal favorite song thus far is Nothing Comes Easy which is both raw and artistic in nature. I have always enjoyed GodSmack, but I think they have upped the ante with their past two albums. The Oracle was a huge success and I anticipate 1000HP being even more successful. The album track listing is as follows: 1) 1000HP, 2) FML, 3) Something Different, 4) Whats Next?, 5) Generation Day, 6) Locked and Loaded, 7) Living in the Grey, 8) I Don't Belong, 9) Nothing Comes Easy, 10) Turning to Stone.
With the album only being out a day old, its hard to know how the response will be from fans and critics. However, I guarantee that everyone that listens to the album will fall in love with it. Sully has one of those distinct vocals in metal and the band feeds off loudness and speed. I rate the album a 9/10. I hope you all will check it out and give some feedback. Skid Row also released a new album yesterday, but I have to say that their material has been disappointing and they have not come close to the solo material that Sebastian Bach has made.
