HAIL TO THE CRUE

I just finished reading the Anniversary Edition of Motley Crue's best seller "THE DIRT" for the third time.  I must admit, every time I read the book I am utterly amazed at the life that this band lived and the fact that they are all still alive and well.  What is even more amazing is the fact that they are about to release their final studio album and that they will do a farewell tour.  Motley Crue has to be the best Glam Metal Band of all time, although I hate that term.  Some of the best musicians have come from what many refer to as "Hair Bands."  Nonetheless, Motley Crue remains an ICON of the Glam Metal Era and have left their footprints all over the Metal Community.

As the Preface of the novel reads; "The Story Here Presented Will be Told By More Than One Pen, as the story of an offense against the laws is told in court by more than one witness."  This Quote comes from the mouth of Wilkie Collins in the "Woman in White"...et all 1860.  Many of the band members tales center around what has become known as "The Motley House."  The House is described in great detail as fans and readers alike are treated to the dirty secrets that went on in the early life of the band.  Drugs, alcohol, sex, women, orgies, other bands...you name it and it probably happened in this house.  If you have not read "The Dirt" then you have missed out on a priceless piece of history that no documentary or Behind the Music Special can produce.  The stories of this house are told from many perspectives, but one things for sure, this house was a cluster#$%#%%#.

Vince Neil (Vocals), Mick Mars (Guitar), Nikki Sixx (Bass) and Tommy Lee (Drums) are all legends in their own right.  The fact that they were able to go on a and form one of the most successful hard rock/heavy metal bands of all-time is a complete miracle.  First of all, they were all reckless.  There is still the argument that goes on wether Motley Crue or Guns-N-Roses are the most "Dangerous Band" in History.  They all took part in heavy doses of drugs, alcohol, and sex.  Tommy Lee and Vince Neil were the ones with more sex appeal.  Nikki Sixx was the biggest drug addict of the four.  And Mick Mars, well....Mick, he was just the quiet one.  Except when he was indulging in the treachery.

Motley Crue remains one of the most popular bands of modern day metal.  The Band was formed in 1981 on the Sunset Strip of Los Angeles California by Nikki Sixx and Tommy Lee.  They then recruited Vince Neil and Mick Mars.  They have sold over 75 Million Albums world wide and 25 Million in the United States alone.  As you can read in their book, the Band lived a hedonistic lifestyle that included crime, alcoholism, drug addictions, near death experiences and LOTS of Sex.  Motley Crue has been ranked Tenth on the "Top Ten Heavy Metal Bands of all-time" and Ninth on "VH1's All Time Top Ten Metal Bands.  Motley Crue has released nine studio albums beginning with Too Fast For Love in 1981 and ending with their most recent Saints of Los Angeles in 2008.  The Band plans on touring with Alice Cooper through 2015 which has been said to be their farewell tour.

I can remember when Dr. Feelgood was released in 1989 like it was yesterday.  I cannot say that any of their earlier material was better than another; however, Dr. Feelgood is my personal favorite.  5 Singles were released from Dr. Feelgood, the most for any of their albums.  Dr. Feelgood, Kickstart My Heart, Without You, Don't Go Away Mad, and Same Ol' Situation were all released as singles.  The album reached Number One on the Billboard 200 in 1989.  Dr. Feelgood went 6x Platinum in May of 1997.  Famous producer Bob Rock helped the Band take their game to the next level on this album.  During the production, there was a ton of animosity and conflict between the band members so Rock decided to have each member record their parts separately.  That is what makes this album all the more Great.

Sometimes it is forgotten that Vince Neil left the band for a short time.  In 1994, the Band released their self titled album "Motley Crue" with local Philly Star John Corabi on vocals.  Although this album may not have received the fanfare and high reviews, this album actually remains one of their greatest works of all-time.  The song "Uncle Jack" is extremely powerful.  Another great song from this album is "Till Death Do Us Part."  John Corabi has the perfect voice for this album.  As I mentioned, this album is very underrated and should be a part of any metal fan's catalog.  Every song on the album could be considered a hit.

No matter if you are a fan of their earlier material or their later music, Motley Crue is an ICON of Heavy Metal.  Just like Black Sabbath is the Forefather of Heavy Metal.  And Judas Priest is the Godfather.  And AC/DC, Metallica, Iron Maiden are the fathers.  Motley Crue is the ForeFather of Glam Metal.  Bands like LA Guns, RATT, Poison, Warrant, Autograph, Stryper, and many more followed suit after Motley Crue.  So even before Metallica became big, Motley Crue was dominating the clubs on the SunSet Strip.  So I ask...what is your favorite Motley Crue album?  What are your favorite Motley Crue songs?  How many Crue concerts have you attended?  Who is your idol?  Vince, Nikki, Tommy, or Mick?  My favorite album is Dr. Feelgood.  My favorite songs are Kickstart My Heart, Too Young to Fall in Love, Helter Skelter, Same Ol' Situation, and Don't Go Away Mad (Just Go Away).  I have been to 5 Crue Concerts.  And if I had to pick a favorite, I like Nikki.  I just like him for many reasons...his battles with addiction, his solo career with Sixx AM, his book The Heroin Diaries.

So, maybe in the near future we will have a Motley Crue Marathon on one of the Philly Rock Shows.  Just put in your requests and we will go from there.  Meanwhile, do not miss this farewell tour.  Motley Crue always puts on an amazing live show.  And beings that this is the end of the line, you will definitely want to see them.  I think it is very fitting that they have chosen Alice Cooper to join them on the tour.  Alice wears makeup, which was Motley Crues calling card in the early days.  Seriously, how cool would it be for the Band to come out wearing the same makeup on this final tour.  I think that would be so awesome.  Anyways, thanks for joining me for my first post on Philly Rock Radio.  I hope my previous fans will take advantage of the site and I also hope to gain many new fans as well.  Also, if anyone has a request of a topic that I may cover in a future blog...feel free to give me a heads up.  And to all my fellow METAL HEADS...ROCK ON YYYYYY.
