The breakup leaves Megadeth without half of their band as they plan to enter the studio for their fifteenth album. As a huge Megadeth fan, I cannot say that this is a huge surprise. The Band's leader Dave Mustaine is very rigid and hard to get along with at times. Honestly, this version of Megadeth with Chris, Shawn, David Elleffson and Dave Mustaine was probably the second best lineup that the band has ever shared. Chris Broderick brought a lot to the table as far as harmonizing leads and bridge solos. Shawn was a beast on the drums and matched the other members intensity.
So as we go forward, one would ask who would be the best candidates to take Chris and Shawn's place in the band. Well, I am not so sure this will ever be a remote possibility; however, if I was Dave Mustaine now, I would be on speed dial with Nick Menza and Marty Friedman. The lineup of Mustaine, Ellefsson, Menza and Friedman was probably Megadeth's best as well as most successful version. Any Megadeth fan would jump through hoops to see this lineup again, although it probably will not happen. Megadeth needs to get back to their thrash roots that we saw in the album Rust in Peace. Dave Mustaine is magical as far as his lyrics and music writing; however, I feel the band would benefit from a shift to the past.
Megadeth has conquered all barriers as far as mainstream and industrial and new age metal. I think Dave Mustaine should realize that he is smaller than the band and that it takes a full band to make musical magic. We saw this with Dave when he left Metallica and formed Megadeth in the beginning. If Marty Friedman and Nick Menza would be open to a reunion...then Mustaine would be a fool to not jump at this chance. Especially on the verge of entering the studio for their next album. Any Megadeth fan would love a return to RUST IN PEACE. Megadeth has showed that they can perform at every level. Now it is time to go back and time and release a kick ass thrash album.
No matter what happens, the loss of Chris Broderick and Glenn Drover hurts Megadeth in a huge way. Both of these musicians were extremely talented at their craft and leave a tremendous hole in the middle of the band. Megadeth will travel as far as Mustaine takes them; however he needs to realize that he is just one of the team. I am sure that many of the mainstream metal outlets such as Blabbermouth and Metal Insiders are not shocked at this news. Megadeth is known for band turnover and a ton of it goes back to Mustaine. I mean, Dave Mustaine is one of my metal heroes but I am privy to his sometimes erratic nature. So for that, I say "Dave...wake up...this is a crossroads in your career not only as a musician, but also as a boss and leader." We shall see in the coming weeks what will become of Megadeth. One would only hope that the change is positive.
